Basic Pool Maintenance

Whenever anyone thinks of their dream house, there is always a swimming pool at the back. Having a swimming pool at your house can be pretty amazing but it comes with certain responsibility. Swimming pool maintenance very important as it can quickly turn into a source of diseases and infection. There are some Pool maintenance basics one must always know if they have a pool in their house.

The total alkalinity of the pool should be kept in check as it changes the pH of pool water. If total alkalinity is too high or too low it will directly affect the pH of pool water. When the total alkalinity is low then pH of water becomes really unstable. The pH of the water should be always kept neutral between 7.2-7.6, as taught by orange county pool maintenance.

Calcium Hardness and Chlorine level also need to be maintained. Calcium and magnesium are present in water when water evaporates it increases the calcium hardness in water. It should be kept between 250ppm to 500ppm if it is more or less than the optimum range then it can be harmful. Similarly, chlorine in water stops the growth of bacteria and fungi. Pool water should be chlorinated from time to time so that fungi growth doesn’t increase in the pool. But if chlorine level is increased then it can because of skin problems.

Methods to keep your pool in perfect condition

Shock Treatment

It is a process in which chlorine is added to water. Chlorine is added in high concentration at 5 to 10 ppm to water at sundown. Shock treatment should be started after sundown starting the pumps and filters. Before entering the pool make sure to check the concentration of chlorine is between 1 ppm to 3 ppm. Also before starting the shock treatment check for the chemicals and pH of the pool water.

Calcium Hardness Increaser

Calcium and Magnesium level in water need to be kept in check. If the calcium level is low then calcium hardness increaser has to be added to get calcium level between 250ppm to 500ppm.

Algaecide is used to stop the growth of algae in pool water. Chlorine also helps with the same thing but algaecide can be kept used as a backup to the shock treatment.

Few basic guidelines for pool maintenance

There are various Pool maintenance basics to check that your pool in a perfect condition;

– pH of pool water should be between 7.2-7.6.

– Total Alkalinity should be between 120-150ppm

– Calcium Hardness 200-250ppm for Concrete Pools and 175-225ppm for Vinyl Pools.

– Free Chlorine and Bromine level should be between 1-3ppm and 3-5ppm respectively.

– There should be no iron or copper in pool water.

These tests should be done 2-3 times in a week during summers when the pools are used for longer duration. While performing these tests or cleaning, children should be kept away from the pool and told not to go inside until the chemical levels are checked.

Apart from all these tests pools should be cleaned properly from time to time. Pool maintenance basics are necessary because being exposed to some of these chemicals for a longer duration can cause severe skin problems. So follow the basic steps, so you can have fun at the pool with your family.
